Fashionista Nails in Fortune

Fortune is the second set of Fashionista Nails that Esther sent me to try. Rather than using a silver polish as a base for the decals, as I did last time, I decided to use a holographic polish, like Lacquered Lizard did, so I used GOSH Holographic. The results? Absolutely wonderful. I only took pictures of one hand this time, since the designs on each hand were similar enough that you'd have to inspect them closely to tell the difference.

*sigh* I am in love. Remember how I went crazy over the first set? Well, I like these even better. Yes, it's possible. I think this pattern goes particularly well over a holographic polish, though I'm sure it would look fantastic over gold, silver, or bronze as well - I may have to try an accent nail over Orly Luxe with one of the extra strips I have left. This time, I did a wear test, and these suckers lasted for four days, which is longer than my polish usually lasts on its own, and much longer than GOSH Holographic lasted on its own the last time I wore it. I don't have a picture because I'm stupid and forgot to take one, but after four days, one nail peeled most of the way off, and that was it. In fact, I think they would've lasted longer, but I inspected the edge of the decal that lifted up, and I appear to have not covered the edge completely with top coat. I suspect that my hot showers made them lift off, but to stay on for four days is nonetheless very impressive! I told my mom that she might have to get me another set of the Fortune decals for my birthday. She said maybe. :)

Here's a new nail blog I discovered yesterday. They're almost to 100 followers - who wants to be the 100th? :)

Until next time!

Pink Wednesday: Ulta Baby Doll

On Wednesdays we wear pink...join us!

Ulta Baby Doll is one of two Ulta polishes I picked up a couple weeks ago in the BOGO free sale. I got it as part of my search for the perfect, opaque, pale pink. I think I may have found it - Baby Doll is sheer but even in one coat, and opaque in three. You can still see a little VNL at three coats in my picture, but it's not there in real life. The nice thing about wearing one coat is that it covers up my staining...not in the picture, but in real life. Sometimes I wish my camera could only see as well as I do.

indoors, artificial light

I don't wear this kind of color very often, but sometimes I just want a clean, fresh pink, and this is the pink for such an occasion. By the way, my hands are definitely not as tan as they look in these photos...not that the pictures make me look tan, they just make me look less pale than I am. I think pale polishes do that. Anyway, I hope you're all having a great hump day! I know I can't wait until Friday.

Icing Electric Feeling

Icing Electric Feeling is a rather interesting polish, and I'm not quite sure how to describe it. It's a jelly, but it's opaque in three coats. It's like a neon in that it dries to a satin finish, but it's not as eye-searing as a neon. It's streaky, but it builds and evens out quickly. I guess the best thing to do is just show the pictures! This is three coats without top coat, and then with a coat of Rush.

 indoors, artificial light
indoors, artificial light

With top coat, Electric Feeling is like a lighter cousin to Revlon Royal, which is a plus in my opinion. Since it's not completely flat without top coat (I'm not a huge fan of super-matte cremes), I can see myself wearing this with or without top coat. I'm pretty sure it'll stain if you don't wear base coat, but I did wear base coat and had no staining. And you should always wear a base coat, anyway. :) Until next time!

CoverGirl Arctic Violet

Sorry for posting so late in the day today...I have had an incredibly hectic day today. It was definitely a Monday. Hopefully, the lovely polish I have for you today will make up for it! Even better, it's in my giveaway, so you can click here and have a chance to get it for yourself. The polish I'm speaking of is CoverGirl Arctic Violet, a ShimmerSlicks polish from back in the day when the only nail polish I wore was Bon Bons or the red The Little Mermaid polish I had that washed off with water. But moving on from my small tangent, Arctic Violet resurfaced at quite a few Dollar Tree stores a while back in two-packs with IceSlicks polishes (which I will be showing several of at some point), and I managed to get one of those two-packs. While I got it for the IceSlicks polish that was in the package, Pink Ice, I ended up really liking Arctic Violet, too.

indoors, artificial light

This is two coats without top coat. As you can see, Arctic Violet is a gorgeous taupe-y greyish purple with a gorgeous silver shimmer. Even though it was made quite a while back, I feel like it's a surprisingly trendy color. Clearly, CoverGirl was ahead of its time when it came to polish, and now they've regressed and are behind the times. Come on, CoverGirl, we know you can make awesome polish - here's the proof! Anyway, Arctic Violet is warmer and less blue than my photograph shows (THANK you, crappy weather), so I'll probably be re-swatching this at some point. I probably never would've picked this up if it hadn't come with Pink Ice, but I'm very glad to have gotten my hands on it, even if it does smell like...well...old nail polish. Now, go enter my giveaway if you haven't already!

250 Followers Giveaway! CLOSED

This giveaway is now closed.

EDIT: Idiot that I am, I forgot to say that this IS an INTERNATIONAL giveaway. I don't care where you live; you can still enter!

I've been compiling some stuff for a giveaway ever since I got close to hitting 200 followers, and I finally decided to post it...there's more stuff I'd like to accumulate, but I figured I had held out long enough. :) Here's the prize: Cover Girl Arctic Violet, Cover Girl Pink Ice, Finger Paints Romanticism Ruby, China Glaze peppermint cuticle oil, Revlon Perplex, an unnamed Sally Girl layering polish, China Glaze Fairy Dust, a silver Kiss striper, Sinful Colors Green Ocean, Sally Hansen In the Spotlight, and Sally Hansen HD Laser. Sorry for the horrendous picture...I'll do you a favor and not make it huge like my pictures usually are.

I really want this giveaway to be a way of saying thanks to everyone who has followed me so far, and I thought about making it a requirement that you already have been a follower. Then I figured that there are probably people who read this blog that aren't yet following via GFC, and I didn't want to leave them out (plus, there's nothing wrong with new followers), so this is how I'm doing it:

+1 for being a new follower (as in, you followed after I posted this)
+5 for being an "old" follower (as in, you followed before I posted this)
+1 for tweeting about the giveaway
+1 for putting the giveaway somewhere on your blog (post, sidebar, it doesn't matter)
+1 if you tell me what you'd like to see more of on Never Unpolished

Also, I want to point out that you have to be a public follower for your entry to be counted - I have no way to validate your entry otherwise.

The giveaway will end May 6, 2011,  because that's my 18th birthday. :) Now put your entries in the form and click "submit!"

P.S. All products in this giveaway were purchased by myself, which should be pretty obvious since the products are pretty random. :)

Lightning Bolt

Inspired by the stormy weather yesterday, I decided to do a lightning bolt manicure. I used Sally Hansen Celeb City for the silver and Kelier blue for the crackle. The blue is a bit darker and more opaque than in the photo; I think my camera picked up on the shine of the silver and decided it didn't care about paying attention to anything else. Funnily enough, the sun is out today and I could've taken better pictures if I'd kept it on, but I put on my next set of Fashionista Nails since it was supposed to be rainy all day again. I should probably learn not to rely on the weathermen.

indoors, artificial light

I really need to learn how to make my cuticle gaps all the same length. Good grief, that is sad. Anyway, that's all for me today...I'm not in a rambly mood today, for once. Until next time!

Pink Layering

Today I have some layering for you...I put on three coats of Maybelline Colorama in Rush Blush on last night (thank you, Ange!) and decided it needed something else, so I added one coat of Sinful Colors Pinky Glitter and one coat of China Glaze Golden Enchantment. (Pinky Glitter is basically the pink-based version of Hottie and Nail Junkie.) I took one picture (mostly) in focus and one out of focus, so that you could see the iridescent/holo glitter.

indoors, artificial light
indoors, artificial light

Rush Blush really is a blush sort of color...in fact, I think I may have an old thing of blush that's close to this. It's not quite opaque in three coats, though it appears to be in all but the most finicky of lighting situations. I didn't wear this long because I had some other things (*ahem* Fashionista Nails in Fortune) planned and because I wasn't really in the mood for a pink, but I'll probably pull this combination out again at some point.

Also, my apologies, but I probably won't have any outdoor pictures for a while because the weather here is going to be entirely rainy and cloudy and generally nasty for the next week or so. While Monday is supposed to be "mostly sunny" according to NOAA, I'd bet ten bucks that the sunny part is going to be while I'm at school. I do love this kind of weather, but it's inconvenient for nail blogging.

P.S. 40% chance of a wintry mix tonight? In March? In southern Missouri? Crazy.

P.P.S. 249 followers...wanna be my 250th?

Fashionista Nails in Nymph

I had heard of Fashionista Nails, which is a fairly new company, last month on Lacquered Lizard, and I thought they sounded really cool. Naturally, I was therefore very excited when Esther of Fashionista Nails contacted me to see if I'd like to review some of her products! I believe my response to her email was something like "YES YES YES YES YES PLEEEEASE." Except hopefully a bit more professional. ;) Anyway, Fashionista Nails are kind of similar to nail polish strips (Incoco, Sally Hansen, etc.) in that you can have an intricate design on your nails without all the work, but they're much easier to use and much more versatile. Instead of nail polish, they're full-nail-sized water decals. This means that you can adjust them on the nail before covering them with top coat, which makes them much, much easier to apply. It also means that you can layer them over a variety of polishes, though you'll want to use a fairly light color. You can look on the Fashionista Nails website for a tutorial on applying the decals, though I think it would be pretty easy even without the tutorial. But here's what you really want to see - the pictures:

a picture of the Nymph nail set from the Fashionista Nails website
outdoors, shade (left hand)
indoors, artificial light (left hand)
outdoors, sunlight (right hand)

Aren't they gorgeous? The instructions recommend a silver base (Sally Hansen Celeb City), so that's what I used, but I'm planning on using GOSH Holographic as a base for my other set, Fortune. Lacquered Lizard used Nfu Oh #61 as a base for one finger in this post, and I think it looks absolutely amazing! I'm absolutely loving these, and other people are too - I've gotten a ton of compliments on my nails in the past two days! I want to see how long these will wear, but I think I want to try that with the second set, because my application wasn't quite perfect with these - you can see that it looks like I have tipwear on some nails, but that's actually because I was too aggressive with filing the ends off the decals. I'll try and do some swatching this weekend so I'll have something to keep you all entertained while I wear Fortune.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the price on these. They're $10, which is comparable to Sally Hansen and other nail polish strips. I feel like this is worth mentioning because I am not willing to pay $10 for the SH strips - I feel like most of the designs are something I can replicate fairly well, some of the designs are grainy, and they're a bit tricky to apply. I don't want to pay $10 for that. Fashionista Nails, on the other hand, I would be willing to pay $10 for, because they're much easier to apply, the designs (at least this one and the ones featured on Lacquered Lizard) are crisp on the nail, and I could not replicate the designs with nail art. So anyway, that's my two cents. Also, I wasn't going to list some of the ones I'm hoping to buy when I have some spending money (someday, hopefully :/), but then I realized that would be a very long list, so I'll spare you. Anyway, that's all for today! My vocal solo and ensemble perform at districts tomorrow, and I'm going to be there all day for two performances...so I may be painting my nails in my downtime. I'm sure I won't be doing homework. ;P Until next time!

Coast to Coast Classics

I have to say...while there are some colors in this that I'll be looking for swatches of, this collection is not making my socks roll up and down. I do like most of the names, though - for the most part, they don't make me roll my eyes are much as OPI names usually do. I may get I Eat Mainely Lobster just because of the name - it's just cheesy enough for me. :)

OPI Launches Touring America Collection for Fall/Winter 2011OPI hits the open road with a new take on classic style in the Touring America Collection for Fall/Winter 2011. Inspired by Americana and cities with rich cultural heritage, the collection’s twelve shades offer comfortable glamour and wearable elegance for nails and toes. “My recent road trip across the country sparked the creation of the Touring America Collection,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director. “Autumn is a time for reinvention, and these shades revive classic, iconic colors for fall, from cool heather, khaki and chocolate to warm rose, peach and red.”

The season’s go-to shades of taupe and pearl grey appear in variations from dark to light – A-taupe the Space Needle, Get in the Expresso Lane, French Quarter for Your Thoughts, and Suzi Takes the Wheel. Lush urban neutrals in deep sapphire (Road House Blues), rich raisin (Honk If You Love OPI), chic olive (Uh-oh Roll Down the Window), and coffee brown (I Brake for Manicures) merge with iconic red (Color to Diner For), vivid rose (My Address is “Hollywood”), and luminous coral and orange (I Eat Mainely Lobster, Are We There Yet?) for an expansive color landscape.

“This collection will take women around the world on the ultimate tour across the USA, with stops in Baltimore, Clarksdale, Hollywood, Jackson Hole, Memphis, Milwaukee, New Orleans, New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, St. Louis, and Tucson,” explains Suzi. “Together, the locales that inspired Touring America make up a rich palette of color complementing trends from the runway, where we saw a mix of feminine details and dramatic menswear touches.”

Touring America includes the following shades:

Are We There Yet?
Don’t make me reach back there and take that perfect melon shade!

I Eat Mainely Lobster
We “clawed” through crowds to catch this coral for you.
My Address is "Hollywood"
We put this pretty rose-pink on the map.
Color to Diner For
I’ll take the rosy-red with a side of “awesome.”
Honk if You Love OPI
Don’t let this gorgeous dark grape pass you by.
Road House Blues
In this case…R&B stands for “Really Blue.”
Suzi Takes the Wheel
Buckle up—she’s not stopping until she gets to gray!
French Quarter for Your Thoughts
Want beads? Then show us your sexy gray nails!

Uh-oh Roll Down the Window
You’re gonna wanna pull over for this “unexpected” olive green.

A-taupe the Space Needle
You’ll climb to new heights with this creamy-rich taupe.

Get in the Expresso Lane
An amped-up dark brown that’ll never letcha down!

I Brake for Manicures
This gorgeous eggplant-plum has our full attention.

Pink Wednesday: Milani Pink Out Loud

Soooo...I totally intended to wear a pink today. I really did. And then I got my samples from Fashionista Nails (review coming shortly!), and they were both awesome, and neither of them were pink. So instead of a current pink, I have a swatch of Milani Pink Out Loud to show you. I'm not sure why I didn't think to save my Pink Rose Diamond post for today...clearly I wasn't thinking ahead. Anyway, I only have one photo of this and I'll definitely be re-doing it in the sun at some point, but this is it for now. I used two coats without top coat.

indoors, artificial light

Dry fingers...yuck. Anyway, the color in this picture is fairly accurate, though maybe a bit darker than real life, but the gold shimmer is much more prominent in real life. Pink Out Loud is a glass-flecked shimmer (my favorite kind) similar to several Zoyas. So since I love that finish and I love anything with gold shimmer, I was sold. Anyway, sorry for the crap review - tomorrow's will be much better, I promise!

Shatter Line Extended with Bold Blues!

Is it just me, or do you think OPI's trying to keep up with the competition? I'm really excited for these, though. And sorry for the barrage of press releases, but I just received this and wanted to post it right away. Also, I have to say I think the QR code thing sounds pretty neat.

OPI Launches Bestselling Shatter Coat in Three Blue-Hued Shades

OPI expands its Shatter line with the addition of three new trendsetting shades: Blue, Navy and Turquoise. With nautical hues of cobalt, indigo and sapphire, these blues provide the perfect look for summer nails in one simple step. Inspired by graffiti art, Shatter leaves behind a crackled, two-texture finish when painted over any dry OPI hue. Adding top coat takes Shatter from matte to glossy in seconds.

Blue Shatter

Navy Shatter

Turquoise Shatter

“Black Shatter was received with great fanfare, showing that women are looking for new ways to express themselves and are excited to try different textures on their nails,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director. “By adding a variety of colors to the line, there are more options for every woman, whether she is looking for a funky aquamarine or elegant deep blue. Unlike traditional nail art which can be complicated and difficult to replicate, Shatter is easy to use and allows everyone to experiment with this new trend.”

In addition to the original Black Shatter, the line also features the Shatter coat in White, Red and Silver. All Shatter retail displays now feature Quick Response (QR) code, a two-dimensional barcode readable by smart phones and mobile phones with cameras and Internet capability. A quick scan of the display’s QR code will directly link to a demonstrational video – making application foolproof.

All Shatter products contain no DBP, Toluene, or Formaldehyde, and feature OPI’s exclusive ProWide™ Brush for the ultimate in application.

Blue Shatter, Navy Shatter, and Turquoise Shatter will be available beginning May 2011 at Professional Salons, including Beauty Brands, Beauty First, Chatters, Dillard’s, JCPenney, Pure Beauty, Regis, Trade Secret, and ULTA, for $8.50 ($10.95 CAN) suggested retail for each Shatter coat.

White and Red Shatter Debut for French Open!

Serena Williams Serves Up Four New Shades for OPI Glam Slam! Collection

OPI captures Serena Williams’ winning spirit with four additions to the Glam Slam! collection, including two new shades of the fashionable, must-have Shatter – Red and White. Launching in conjunction with the French Open, Glam Slam! France celebrates with two duo-packs for four unbeatable looks.

The first Lacquer set includes Spark de Triomphe (a monumentally marvelous silver glitter), paired with White Shatter. Once applied over completely dried Nail Lacquer, Shatter begins to crackle, leaving behind a two-texture pattern on each nail. The second Lacquer set features Rally Pretty Pink (rise to the occasion with this shimmering sunset-pink), paired with Red Shatter.

“We are very excited to continue working with tennis superstar Serena Williams to launch the next Glam Slam! shades,” said Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director. “France is a country with a rich history in fashion and setting trends. These four new color options are ideal for showcasing your own personal style, à la Serena, whether worn alone or overlaid with Shatter for instant nail art.”

“Whether I’m on or off the court, style is important,” explains Serena Williams. “In addition to watching the runways for the latest trends, I think it’s important to add my own unique elements. With the new White and Red Shatter, I can customize my nails for a high-fashion take on the classically elegant silver and sunset shades in the Glam Slam! France collection.”

Serena Williams has received the World Number One in singles ranking by the Women’s Tennis Association on five separate occasions, along with being listed as sixth on the all-time greatest champions list. Additionally, she has won two Olympic gold medals in women’s doubles and has earned 27 Grand Slam titles to date. Serena is the most recent player to have held all four Grand Slam singles titles simultaneously and only the fifth woman in history to do so.New shades in the Glam Slam! collection will be introduced to coincide with each of the four major tournaments, beginning with the Australian Open in January 2011, followed by launches in May 2011 for the French Open, June 2011 for Wimbledon and August 2011 for the US Open. Wet n Wild Party of Five Glitters

Wet n Wild Party of Five Glitters is one of the now many polishes that are copies of Deborah Lippmann Happy Birthday. It's very festive and a great topper, but today I have some pictures of it by itself. I used one coat without top coat, and while I only wore this for a day, I rather enjoyed it. Do excuse my yellowed nails, though...they're part of the reason I only wore this for one day.

outdoors, shade
outdoors, sunlight

I did take a picture indoors, but I'm not going to post it - partly because it adds nothing you can't see in the other pictures, and partly because it makes my nails look even more stained. Yeah, whatever. Anyway...as you can see, Party of Five Glitters is made up for multicolored large hex and small round glitter. There are some differences in color between the two - Happy Birthday has gold hex glitter, while PoFG only has small round gold glitter, and PoFG doesn't have the small round silver glitter that Happy Birthday does. However, the biggest difference for me is that Happy Birthday's small glitter is square, not round like all of the drugstore polishes that imitate it. In this case, that's a big enough difference that I still want Happy Birthday. I did win an Apothica gift card in a giveaway, though, so that's probably what I'll spend it on when I get it...until then!

Sally Hansen Nail Prisms Pink Rose Diamond

Today I'll be showing you Sally Hansen Pink Rose Diamond, which I was fortunate enough to find at my local Dollar Tree a while back. While the bottle of Purple Diamond I got wasn't very holo, Pink Rose Diamond definitely is, and I'm glad - though it would have been nice if the purple was the super-holo one, since I love purple. Oh well! I took quite a few pictures of this one to show its beauty as well as I could.

 outdoors, sunlight
 outdoors, sunlight
outdoors, sunlight
indoors, artificial light

outdoors, shade

It's not as holo as GOSH Holographic, but it does pretty well for itself. I think it looks very pretty in the shade as well as in the sunlight - sparkly, but in a soft kind of way. I definitely need to get myself some more holos, since I'm loving all the ones I have. I'm reluctant to pay full price for OPI's DS polishes, or I would probably have all of those already! I saw some Tronicas the other day, but I passed on them because they're not holo enough for me.

And before I go, here's yet another new nail blog I've found...hurry on over, she's got a Black Shatter giveaway going on right now!

Name That Franken!

I've made several frankens in the last week, and there's one of them that I just can't seem to come up with a name for - at least, not one that I like. So, I thought I'd enlist your help and see if you could come up with anything! Here's a bottle shot:

Have any ideas? Post them in the comments, tell me on Twitter, email me, whatever! This baby needs a name!

Plaid Nails

Sorry for not posting yesterday - I was out of town and thought I'd be back in time to post, but I wasn't. Maybe the three posts Friday make up for it? Anyway, I've been wanting to do plaid nails for quite a while, but each time I thought about it I was too intimidated to do it because I thought it would be really hard. However, I finally just took the jump! Here's what I did:

indoors, artificial light
indoors, artificial light (w/ matte TC)

I based the design off of a picture tutorial I saw in a scan of the January edition of Nail Up!, a Japanese nail magazine. I got the scan from this post on I Love Nail Polish. Here's the design I copied (I cropped it out of the scan of the whole page):

Instead of white, I used grey (Zoya Harley), and I used Kiss stripers for the black and red. The red striper wasn't opaque enough to show up over the black stripes, so I covered up the places where they crossed in black. I did have to try twice on a couple nails, but I think it turned out pretty well overall, considering I have trouble drawing parallel lines when I can't erase them and try again. As you can see, I put Essie matte top coat on in the second picture so you could see the design better. Now that I'm looking at the pictures, I think I prefer it matte - and I'm sure I'll be doing more plaid manis in the future, so I may have to wear those matte-ified.

Until next time...I can't believe it's almost Monday! However, it is the start of spring today, so I guess that kind of balances it out. Happy spring!

OPI Nice Stems! Summer 2011 Preview

This looks like a nice collection, but the one I'm really interested in is I Lily Love You - is it glitter? Is it flakies? Is it opaque or sheer as heck like the Katy Perry glitters? We'll just have to wait until June and see!

Summer Pinks in Bloom!

Nice Stems! by OPI Revamps Nails with Vibrant Pink Hues for Summer 2011

With whimsical names based on their floral inspirations, these vibrant, flirty colors range from pale, frosty pink to rich fuchsia.  Nice Stems! offers fingers and toes a perfectly pink shade for all of summer’s looks.
“These vibrant, feminine hues complement 60’s ladylike fashions, 70’s glam looks, and bold color-blocking, which are the season’s staples,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director.  “The Nice Stems! collection also offers an interesting contrast and feminine accent to the punk and biker looks on the runways.”
Nice Stems! by OPI shades include:

“Using different micas and glitters can give lacquer a 3-dimensional look,” adds Weiss-Fischmann.  “I Lily Love You is a glitter coat that can be layered over any of the other three shades to add a bright sparkle; or, it can be worn on its own for a subtle tint of pink with strands of glitter.”
